Check the audio inside the M4A
M4A is a container and can hold different audio codecs, including AAC and Apple Lossless. The source codec matters; the extension alone does not guarantee that every file can be opened.

Choose an MP3 preset when that is the format your player or workflow requires. Conversion creates a new encoded file; renaming an M4A extension to .mp3 does not perform this change.
MP3 output is lossy. An AAC source has already undergone lossy compression, while converting Apple Lossless to MP3 discards information. A larger output cannot restore detail missing from the source.
Add files or a folder and apply an MP3 preset to the queue. Use individual settings when necessary, then check a saved result before processing the rest of your recordings.
Launch Freemore Audio Video Suite and place your supported M4A files in the queue.
Choose Audio, select an MP3 preset and review the available quality and channel settings.
Choose your destination, start conversion and play the output in the app or device that needs MP3.
| Option | When to choose it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | The destination specifically needs MP3. | Re-encoding is lossy; check a sample. |
| PCM WAV | An editor requires uncompressed audio. | It cannot improve a lossy source. |
| Keep M4A | Your current player already accepts the file. | Avoid an unnecessary conversion and retain the source. |
No. M4A is a container commonly used for AAC or Apple Lossless audio. MP3 uses a different audio format, so changing between them requires conversion.
The suite lists M4A input and Apple Lossless/ALAC support. Try the source file first; successful decoding still depends on its codec and condition.
It can reduce additional encoding loss compared with a lower setting, but cannot repair missing source detail or make an already lossy recording lossless.
